Cornelia H., age 25, North Carolina

I got up soon after 4 o’clock & actually staid in the kitchen till breakfast was ready to come on the table. Fannie not well yet. Mr. Henry attributes my early rising to the pills & says I must take more. Finished turnips and commenced digging irish potatoes more than half of which was rotten. I began a net for my head. All well.  *(Fear in North Carolina: The Civil War Journals and Letters of the Henry Family, Eds. Karen L. Clinard and Richard Russell, used with permission.)
