Cornelia H., age 24, North Carolina

Old Terry sent the negroes out the garden today saying he was not done with it yet. He is a scamp. Mr. Henry sent Charlie to Asheville today after a set of buggy harness & a whip, intended to start this evening to Spartanburg but had to go to Night’s shop after buggy tongue so did not get off. He is going to work John Smith & the Well’s horse Jim. They do finely together, make a good match. I worked some quilt pieces in evening for Atheline to piece me a rag quilt. More pleasant than yesterday.  *(Fear in North Carolina: The Civil War Journals and Letters of the Henry Family, Eds. Karen L. Clinard and Richard Russell, used with permission.)
