Cornelia H., age 25, North Carolina

Mail came earlier than usual. Nothing new. They are making every preparation for a big battle at Manassas. The 6th Regiment has gone there. Poor fellows, they have had a hard time in Western Virginia. I hope their lot will be success in the coming struggle. They well deserve a glorious victory. G. W. Peake is in the Regiment. I felt very unwell all day, was sick at night with headache. Matilda Morris spent the day here, helped me on Mr. Henry’s shirt. I got his done about 4 o’clock & went to bed soon after. I got no letters today from any of my friends.  *(Fear in North Carolina: The Civil War Journals and Letters of the Henry Family, Eds. Karen L. Clinard and Richard Russell, used with permission.)
