Cornelia H., age 25, North Carolina

Mr. Henry went to Asheville, staid all day. Capt. McDowell’s company left today. Mr. Henry & Matt came home in the evening. We were all sad. I at the thought of my dear husband being called off. It really seems more than I could bear, to see the only one on whom I can lean for support torn from me by war. I would not expect to see him again till we met in God’s blest abode. It makes me so sad to think of it.  *(Fear in North Carolina: The Civil War Journals and Letters of the Henry Family, Eds. Karen L. Clinard and Richard Russell, used with permission.)
