Cornelia H., age 25, North Carolina

We had a little rain, not much. One company of volunteers came on this evening from Cherokee. Capt. Hays company of cavalry. We baked bread for them. It was an undertaking indeed. Some of the men staid all night here, the others camped at the old hotel place & slept in the old store house. William Tidwell is along. It makes me sad to see so many of our brave men led up to be shot at but such is the fate of war.  *(Fear in North Carolina: The Civil War Journals and Letters of the Henry Family, Eds. Karen L.
