Up for breakfast. Beautiful mild springy day. Practiced from 8 til 9:30. Then went down and got laundry. History at 10, phil. at 11. Good lunch - hamburgers. I ate some raw onions and Betty and Mary couldn’t bear it!! So funny! Came back to room and tried to drown taste and odor in Betty’s cookies and oplets [?] but no soap. Went to town about 1:30, by myself. Back at 2 and studied history while Betty read some of her early literary efforts to me - sort of dragged out the history process. About 4:30 we went to P.O. with Mary and Kath. Letter from Mum. Went over to tearoom and the kids had cigarettes. Betty nearly choked and says never again! Saw Mr. Fowler. Don’t like Katherine - never did. Back to hall. Washed clothes. Dinner at 6 - good. Studied, read, ironed in evening. Am reading book on education by John Dewey. Good. Borrowed Mary’s radio. Bed about 12. This can’t go on - what to do?????

It began to rain last night before I went to bed and kept it up all night, so that this morning the snow was still lower and quite slushy. It is a little cooler tonight and has been snowing a little. I went up the Chapel this morning and got the bookkeeping works over and announced that the class would form this afternoon. Then I went to see Fred Waters and took dinner at Mr. Waters with Fred and his wife Carrie. Taught Bookkeeping and Penmanship this afternoon. Fred came over with me tonight to get some books of his out of the house. I fed Fred Neill’s colts their carrots tonight and took other care of them. Have been writing this evening for practice. I would like to see my Kate tonight.

The bill appropriating $46,500, to institutions for Deaf, Dumb & Blind was taken up and provoked much discussion. Last session $5000 were appropriated to build an institution for Col’d Dep’t. The Board had gone as far as to require the amount above $40,000, to complete it. Amendments were offered to reduce, which I opposed stating that no plans or specifications for the building were to be found in any act of this Gen. Assembly, and whilst I depricated and earnestly condemned, exceeding powers granted, I believed in the establishment of a building that would answer the purpose, be satisfactory, and creditable to the State, and advised members offering amendment to reduce the appropriation, to back such with informative facts and figures, based upon investigation and would [In left margin] move to postpone such to give all objectors opportunity to make investigation and be prepared to act knowingly.

Willie still sick. I keep giving him teas and attending to his diet. Jinnie in the house as she has sore throat. Finished Charlie’s coat & made Sam a pair pants. Still warm. Last Monday evening we had a real summer shower, it thundered & lightened like a warm summer day. Mr. Henry sent for me to go to the mill this evening to take a long walk. Zona would not go so I only went to the mill. Mr. Henry came back with us.
