Saw Chris after 2nd period and told him he was awesome for taking Zach home. Sandra picked me up and took me 2 work. Closed with Meghan and Ann. Went 2 Kim's after Chris gave me a ride home. Audrey, Ashley, Becca, Renee, and Sarah C. were at Kim's birthday party. Went 2 Chris's 4 a bit and we had a nice goodbye hug -- it felt like he needed it. Kissed him, too! We pecked 4 the 1st time ever. Partied until 2:00. I was 1st to bed.

George came to eat and all were up and had bacon and eggs and toast. Pink and Lo painted the new fence in pasture. We ate about 1:30. Meat balls, mash pot., string beans, cake and coffee. We came home about 7:00 waited for pump to go on as Pink regenerated. Folks left immediately and Lo and I bathed and went to funeral home for Kay’s husband.

(m) Up about 9. Practiced most of the morn and really accomplished a lot. Dragged out a lot of old ones. I think George started to come in once at noon but retreated — probably because I still had my gown on. Pop not home for lunch. I had the cramps somethin’ awful most of the afternoon. Aspirin and hot water bottle had to be resorted to. Mary called about 6 to say she was in the same condition and didn’t feel equal to having me down for a fitting. Kay had called before to tell me about the Y.W.C.A. party tonight and I told her I’d come down after Mary’s. A beautiful day and I felt very close to something in the afternoon when I sat out in the back yard. Just after supper a wire came for me from Rochester saying I’d been accepted as a sophomore and something about music credits!! Well, I hit the stratosphere but made a flash decision to go anyway and try to make up the deficiency and still graduate in two years. It was quite cool when I left about 8 for town. No sign of Ashley. It doesn’t really make any difference whether he’s gone or not but it is more interesting somehow just to know he’s still here. Felt queerly let down and rather scared now that I know for sure I’m going. Met Kay just leaving and we went on down to the rooms. Ella, Marguerite, Nancy and Jean P. were already there — and Miss Belk. Pan, Betsy and Ann Ray came a few minutes later. We played games and then consumed a huge chocolate cake Mrs. Miller had baked and cokes. Party broke up about 10:30. Mrs. Massey drove Ella and Marguerite home and then me. Jak Whittaker gave Ella a Benrus watch — and she’s in love with Clay! Ha! I just don’t like Ella and never have. To bed feeling very low and discouraged and back where I was last spring — almost. If I could only get rid of my self — that is at the root of the whole trouble.

Amused the baby and practiced writing this forenoon. Drew a few loads of wood up just before dinner. Dug out a dying cherry tree and burned some logs and stuff along the front fence this afternoon. Went up town early this afternoon so as to send my clock to Frankfort by the stage to have it cleaned. Wrote a letter to ma and one to the N.E. Card Co. tonight. The baby has been very restless today. It is raining tonight.

Mail came but brought nothing new. They have had another fight near Manassas. The Confederates whipped them back. Oh God grant us peace once again is the pray of many a heart. The conscript bill has passed taking men to 45. I fear Mr. Henry will have to go & then farewell to happiness for me. I had a letter from Mr. Henry. He is well. He will be home soon. He said by the 5th of this month. Oh! how I wish he would come. He is needed at home now on business.

Up, and at the office all the morning. At noon home to dinner, and to the office to work all the afternoon again till the evening, and then by coach to Mr. Hales’s new house, where, I find, he hath finished my wife’s hand, which is better than the other; and here I find Harris’s picture, done in his habit of “Henry the Fifth;” mighty like a player, but I do not think the picture near so good as any yet he hath made for me: however, it is pretty well, and thence through the fair home, but saw nothing, it being late, and so home to my business at the office, and thence to supper and to bed.
