September 1, 1960

Very hot over 90 degrees. Wrote letters and worked around here and there doing some cleaning. Out to cabin and back and picked up Carrie’s things to take to her as we are planning to stay at cabin over Sunday and Labor Day. Geo.’s eye bothering and hurting and light bad on it. Marion called noon hour and Pink talked. He had good luck selling so made his quota.

Still hot. When Lo got to the office Geo. had decided to go to Elgin to see the Dr. Dr. was glad he came as complications developed. Not too serious. Did a little washing dresses etc. then went over to Mrs. B.’s. She was going to Mertie’s for weekend. Lo thinks we will be alone. Cooks have gone to Mich.

Lo called the folks just before we left for cabin. Said expected to come Sunday P.M. which they did with their ironing. Very hot but had a good nite’s rest.

George came to eat Sun. A.M. Later Lo vacuumed all thru the house. Very warm. Didn’t know what time the folks would arrive but it was dark and had eaten. Made coffee tho.

September 5, 1960

George came to eat and all were up and had bacon and eggs and toast. Pink and Lo painted the new fence in pasture. We ate about 1:30. Meat balls, mash pot., string beans, cake and coffee. We came home about 7:00 waited for pump to go on as Pink regenerated. Folks left immediately and Lo and I bathed and went to funeral home for Kay’s husband.

Very hot close to 100. Rosemary called had a cancellation so I went at 9:30. Heat seemed to get me down but managed both ways.

Very hot. Washed sheets and cases. Went to Mrs. B.’s for coffee. Suddenly it was dark and as I was leaving the rain came down. Clothes got wet but dried later with all the heat. Ole came in P.M. Late eve. and nite the temp. dropped.

Very cool. Ironed my curtains and sheets etc. Mrs. B. came for coffee. Her back bad. Stayed until after 11:00. Did a little cleaning here and there. Out as usual and back to town. Went to Carrie’s. Not home but at a meeting so had to call her at Mrs. Merchant’s so she could arrange for transportation to S.S. Sun. as we leave early with K.J.

Did up work. Mrs. B. called for me to come over. Her back miserable also stomach upset. Looked badly. Might go to the country and did. Came home made pie, cooked meat, also made cookies and brownies for K.J. Cooks ate with us. Helen wanted us to come to Josie’s with her to look at some of the things. Later home to bathe and to bed. Lo had runny eyes and nose feeling miserable.

Up just before 5:00, dressed and down to get breakfast. Made our beds, ate and washed dishes just a few minutes behind schedule. Couldn’t make any time. Kept running into fog in places. Lo and K.J. loaded car and left at 7:00. A beautiful day and all enjoyed everything. K.J. settled and was going to nap a little before supper. We left her at 4:00, she very tired too. Reached Beloit at 11:00. Stayed for 1 hr. and Lo relaxed, reached home 12:30 and right to bed.

Cleaned up Lo’s car as she was taking Marj Thomas to Honey Bear for lunch. A good day and apparently a good visit. Came home about noon from rummage.

Lo going for perm. at 11:00 so didn’t get home to lunch. She came about 10:30 so she could go to Carrie’s. Helen had called about her gettin refrig. as Gorham was to move all the things from Josie’s. Carrie came here to do some phoning. Bess came later we had coffee and Lo came to take Carrie home about 4:45. Bess wanted to go then too. Lo worn out and no wonder.

A gloomy A.M. Had been raining some. Not much. Mrs. B. had blown a fuse so couldn’t come over waiting for repairs and I waiting for gas men to change meter.

Gloomy this A.M. too but didn’t rain. Cleared off in P.M. By then not interested in work. Went over to Mrs. B.’s. Sat where I could watch door for man or men. Tried to keep busy and did pretty much as Lo ate down town with Lily. Cooks didn’t eat with us at nite and Al. and Pol. were here.

Up early as usual. After breakfast Lo to cabin and right back. Then to pick up Carrie for S.S. She came over after church and stayed until 2:00. Lo had mowed back yard and cut the cord in two. Went to Helen’s and got hers. When we took Carrie home the men were all set to take Mrs. Anderson to the home in Harvard. A sad affair; didn’t go to talk to her.

Washed but no drying day, very damp and drizzly off and on. Hung towels etc. on upper porch dried some. After eating went to get Carrie and look at Dillon’s apt. Could be worse but hi for what its worth.

Took towels etc. down and put up sheets, by nite they were dry. Mrs. B. came for coffee and to have a letter read. Scrubbed back porch and later did a little ironing. Baked apples for supper and also cookies. Went to Carrie’s at noon to talk more about apt. Don’t get far just talking. Lo and G.B. took Suky and kittens to a place on Pleasant Valley Road. Went to church to demonstration flower arrangements and corsages.

Lo not coming for lunch so thot it a good time to have Mrs. B. to eat a little lunch. Fussing with bed pads. Bleaching and drying of clothes etc.

Lo had hair appt. at 12:30 as usual. After eating our eve. meal at cabin left for Elgin. Stopped at Maggie’s, then to Zella’s, not home. M. wanted to stop at the Jewel Store on way back. So she and Lo went in but Maggie didn’t get her grapes as the price too hi. As usual a bag of “nothing” came home with us.

Lo coming home early as we had planned to go to town and purchase a mattress, no key for the apt. yet so decided to look at Flora’s not bad. Carrie afraid she wouldn’t get this one near us and disappointed.

Turned windy and very warm thru the day. Mrs. B. came for coffee. I had baked pie and fried chicken later. Prepared vegetables, salad etc. for eve. meal. Cooks to eat with us, also Jim. Stopped at Carrie’s on way out. Began to rain when Lo came home. Had talked with Noah. Much different and reduced rent but no key.

Up as usual early. Lo out to cabin but home to pick Carrie up. After taking her to SS came home to do a few things and start things for our dinner. Went to veg. stand. So far no key. Took Carrie home and decided to get things out of attic. In the midst when Pink, M. Dorothy and Wilbur came. We came home for a little while, they to the cabin. Didn’t stay long.

Thot I’d better wash if machine worked and did. Not a big wash but a beautiful drying day. Ironed and had drapes dampened. Ole came so didn’t iron them. Lo has a bad throat today and a little ornery.

At 11:00 had to have my hair washed, was gone until about 1:00. Had done a little washing and worked at Carrie’s apt. at nite. Lo vac. the floors. I cleaned bath room helped with floors. Cleaned windows too. Ironed some of the drapes.

Up early and went to Carrie’s. Jim was coming for rubbish etc. for dump. Then he came and helped Lo with the spring and mattress seemed quite easy. Lo and I had put up bed last nite all set but making it. Lo moved little things from Carrie’s all P.M. So hard. George had been to eye dr. Eye not good. A nerve bad. After being at Carrie’s had to bring rugs to apt. to vacuum. Connections bad there at Anderson’s. Mrs. B. came in for a minute.

Carrie expecting to move today don’t know what time. Lo came home after 9:00 said movers coming at 10:00. However 10:30 when they arrived. Lo cut linoleum in D.R. for kitchen in apt. Really had a workout. Lo and I stayed at apt. and Carrie stayed to wait for gas man to disconnect gas and stove there. Missed him. Fortunately he came to apt. and went back and did it and later came and connected plate so all set. Living room pretty good except little things. Carrie at it all day Sat. Lo worked Sat. so we didn’t do any unpacking.
